The ICSUA, in conjunction with Rush University Medical Center, sponsored this conference of social workers, mental health professionals, senior services providers, health and home care workers and nursing home organizations and workers.
The primary goal of the conference was to provide participants with the opportunity to learn and practice the skills of introducing and discussing substance use with older adults and provide knowledge about harm reduction as part of the continuum of options to address high risk use.

The primary goal of the Conference was to create and expand a better informed and integrated network of providers who serve older adults at risk for and experiencing problems related to their use of drugs of all kinds.
The Conference satisfied the State of Illinois cultural competence CE requirement for social workers. The morning keynote, breakout and panel sessions provided a broad overview of some major concerns and case examples of aging and substance use in a variety of practice settings. In the afternoon, participants attended workshops to gain specific knowledge and skills in either:

- screening, brief interventions (SBIRT) and treatment for substance use in older adults;
- using motivational interviewing to initiate and continue conversations about substance use with older adults; or
- healthcare and older adults.

We have regular meetings in Chicago to network, present, and discuss topical issues, and to plan our annual event. There is opportunity for you to attend meetings, either in person or by teleconference, and to join one of our committees. If you want to help older adults with substance use problems and are interested in and committed to networking and increasing services or extending existing services, we invite you to join us. |
